Canon claimed it is much easier to focus at the telephoto end where the depth of field is shallow. A minimum focusing distance of 1 meter also permit fair amount of close-up photography. This lens features exclusive four-group design of focus element, variator, compensator and relay lens element. The employment of a new type of glass in the variator and relay lens effectively controls curvature of field, coma and other aberrations, ensuring high image quality across the entire picture plane. Appropriate power configuration and curvature of the front lens group enable a close minimum focusing distance of only 1 meter.
